York County Libraries will host a “How to Draw Comics and Manga” workshop for aspiring illustrators with Orion Zangara.” Designed for participants, age nine through college students, the workshop will be held from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 1 at Martin Library in York. The program is geared to both beginners and advanced artists wanting to elevate their sequential art skills. Zangara will guide aspiring illustrators through designing expressive characters, world building, and mastering panel layouts. Supplies are included.
“Comic books and manga are a really popular part of our collection because of the unique ways they use art to tell great stories,” says York County Libraries Youth Services Director Mindy McDonnell. “This program is a really special opportunity for teens and tweens interested in creating manga or comic art of their own. Whether they are beginners or more experienced artists, professional illustrator Orion Zangara will walk them step by step through the process.”
Zangara is an illustrator and comic book artist based in Washington, D.C. A graduate of The Joe Kubert School of Sequential Art, he carries on the legacy of his grandfather, the legendary Joe Kubert, co-creator of DC Comics' “Sgt. Rock.”
“This program exemplifies the educational connectivity that libraries regularly provide,” says York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert. “Our program staff identify community interests and create opportunities for individuals to learn directly from professionals. This builds upon the library resources available to everyone year-round. It adds the element of hands-on practice with an expert who can offer guidance and answer questions.” Zangara’s visit is part of the York County Libraries Youth Empowerment Series. The curated programs focus on career exploration, higher education, community service, and personal health.
